Just back from my trip, which took in Sziget and have to say it was another good, solid 'festival' performance from the band. No major surprises in the set-list, all the crowd favorites were there ' Wonderlust King', 'Sally', 'Ultimate', 'Not a Crime', 'Baro Foro', 'Start Wearing Purple' etc.... (sidenote : I really hope we see some variety in the songs chosen for their upcoming winter tour, there are so many songs I'd love them to perform live but never seem to hear!)...
We did take some photos, but they are all a bit crap and as we were something like 20 rows back, are a bit distant. Will see if any are worth uploading when we take them off the camera.
Did meet Mattfromoz there however, and he was front-row and had some fantastic pics, which I'm sure he will upload when he gets back.
I still find it strange watching the band in daylight, especially this time as it was blazing-hot sun too....give me a sweaty venue anyday |

| I'm curious, who else did you see taht you enjoyed? When I saw the lineup, I was sorely tempted to bail on meeting my brother there is September and go to the festival instead. |

I only went for two days (Weds and Fri) and didn't really see THAT much live music, which may sound strange but the place is HUGE and there is so much to see and do its hard to stay in one place for long. I did enjoy the Gipsy Pop Orchestra, who do a light-hearted gypsy take on 80s pop classics, also saw Manu Chao but there was so many people there it was almost uncomfortable although the show was pretty good (minus the two powercuts). Madness were surprisingly good and of course Gogol Bordello. Caught a few acts at the Roma Tent too but only fleetingly.
Great festival though - seriously considering going again next year, regardless of lineup. Food and drink ridiculously cheap. Toilets clean. Every facility you could need. It puts british festivals to shame, it really does. |

Still recovering after a mad 8 days of partying.
Gogol was great as expected and the number of people raving about them was amazing. I believe Eugene was down partying at the Roma tent later that night although the tent was heaving with Amsterdam Klezmer Band (who wre great) so did not see him.
I will be back next year for certain. It does not really matter about who is playing because you know there is going to be something brilliant on with a lot of Balkan music. The organisation of the festival is outstanding as well. Even though we had a couple of thunderstorms. The ground dried out and they had tankers sucking up any puddels etc. It is a close call but I think I rate this festival above Glastonbury now.
The after party is outstanding with so many different bars playing a great variety of music virtually all through the night (Well until 5am when they have a 3 hour music curfew although the bars stay open).
One night heading back to the tent at about 4ish deciding to have one final drink at the bar closet to my tent I got talking to a local lass and somehow got onto the topic of Gogol and she was an absolute massive fan (she is heading to the Prague gig) so we ended up having a mini Gogol party at the bar when the music was turned off with songs played through my mobile phone. She made me jealous because she saw them in the small wan2 tent at Sziget in 2006 and that would have been amazing. With the wooden flooring of the tent the noice would have been deafening. I then made her jealous by showing her the photo I had with Eugene at the DJ gig in North London many months back.
I finally made it back to the tent at 7ish (to find my friends had covered it in toilet paper.
I will upload the photos probably over the weekend. I mangaed to get a few goods one I think but it was quite hard to hold the camera steady. I think I have a video as well
Anyway must get back to sleep, sorry work. |

Here are my Sziget Gogol photos. Some are not to clear but I think there are some good ones. I have a new camera so I was a little worried about it being crushed.
Anyway here they are. I think thy are in reverse order.

was that the band playing when we met up briefly after Madness? (Can't check the vids whilst at work)
Perhaps partly explained why the tent was jumping |

| Amsterdam klezmer were playing by this time I think. I eventually got into the tent. It was not as packed down one side as I thought so there was room. It was going crazy inside and then the Thunder Storm started and it got even crazier. They must have done about 4 encores. Why do we have to wait another year until Sziget. |

I'm considering that and Guca. Maybe both, depending on if I'm destitute by that point. _________________ turn frustration into inspiration... |

Only a few days? Are you crazy. All 7 is essential.
I am trying to calculate my leave for next year. Fortunately I will be able to buy an extra week (Being on a graduate salary the leave is very cheap to buy )
They could just have only the world music stage and the lineup would be quality. |

mattfromoz, you won't remember me, but after reading your post, i'm pretty sure i met you (albeit soso briefly) at sziget. It was down at the front just before Gogol, and you were showing these italian girls the photos on your phone and they were bent hysterical over them. And you were talking about a london gig and my friend and i jumped in and talked to you about it for a while.
Anyway, that's like the least interesting story i've ever told, but still, it's quite cool |

I think I rememeber. Boy it is a small world. There must bahve been a few of us form Avenue B at the fesitival. What did you think of Sziget overall?
Actually I thought the girls were Swedish (but what do I know) and they were very impressed with some of the photos I had. I had snuck up behind them and had started playing a bit of Gogol from my mobile while we weer waiting for them to come on. |

What did I think of it? Oh man, Sziget is my spiritual motherland. I went last year as well, and then literally spent the whole year waiting for the next one. I reckon it's the best festival going right now. It's insane and debauched (did you check out the Mokka Cuka adidas tent? woahhh) but it's also super friendly and safe. And they clean the toilets three times a day! I could go on.
And yeah, Gogol at wan2? *bites fist*
Oh, they might have been Swedish, I'm not sure I just thought I heard them talking in Italian, but there were loads of Italians there, so they might just have been chatting. I loved their reaction to your photos! Like, screaming proper.
I don't know about Avenue B-ers, but I was big style impressed with how many Gogol fans there were. I was camping near a load of nuts french people and after friday I was woken up every morning by them shaking my tent and chanting party party party party party party, afterparty! Everyone was becoming human and acting like Prometheus all over the place.
I take you had a good festival too, yeah? |
