Premium motherfucking gig! My 8th time seeing them live, and one of if not the very best gig I have been to. The band was 100% on their game, Eugene was clearly having fun and taking his time talking to the crowd, and they played a wonderful mix of old and new songs (including Immigrant Punk, Think Locally, Sacred Darling, and a new song about Dynamo Kiev ?). The gig just never ended, I think we got 3 encores? Eugene just kept on coming back for more, it was awesome.

Highlights included Oren singing a line or 2 in Hebrew, Tommy in Ethiopian, and then Pedro in Spanish when it suddenly became clear they were headed straight into Purple (haaa so cool), Eugene singing a few lines from Another Brick in the Wall, did I mention Immigrant Punk because I'm pretty sure the last time I heard that one live was back in '06, Sacred Darling just NEVER ENDING, a girl throwing her knickers onto the stage and Eugene making a face (I'm with you man, that's just gross), and Oren and Sergey coming on stage together to play a beautiful acoustic guitar intro to Sun is on my Side (seriously, those two guys playing guitar beautifully... I'd never seen Sergey playing guiter, and just them two on an empty stage... gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous)

Lastly, Oren Kaplan, my love for you and the way you play your guitar runs deep like the Atlantic Ocean. That is all ♥

Found a video on youtube (not mine!) -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8mJbmabbZc
I hope there'll be more, a dude next to me recorded practically the whole gig and there are some moments I would really like to relive!

I totally agree, this was an amazing show. And it just kept going! The crowd didn't seem to give up either - it was frantic from start to finish. I saw those terrible purple undies get chucked on stage too, classy! Razz It really was a fantastic show and I'm glad I got to see.

Absolutely agree. One of the best performances I've seen them give in 6 years! Three fucking encores, for fuck sake! I think they played for 2 hrs 15 in the end... amazing. Especially since it was hotter than the sun in there!

That was so funny/horrific. I love that he paused to see what had landed at his feet and almost picked them up, realising at the very last second what he was about to touch and doing a great UGH NO face. I feel sorry for the crew member who had to clear that debris up. Wink

I'm always left wondering what the thrower's original plan was. To have Eugene pick it up and declare his love? Um, you threw pants. He's not Justin fucking Bieber, grow up.

Anyway.

Rummaging through Youtube I found some more vids:
Immigrant Punk -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fd-Y5G0iOTU
bit of Not A Crime -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwa-yx3AZ4g
Break the Spell -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvm-BXvsdKk
Think Locally / Sacred Darling -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpgGUi_lPcc
(well I'll be damned, these last two were filmed by the dude next to me! Pffshee you can hear me wail like a banshee in the background when Eugene calls Oren's name. I REGRET NOTHING)

Lin, were you up on the right-side balcony (when facing the stage)? I thought I recognised you, but we've only met the once and that was three years ago, so I wasn't sure.

There are some *gorgeous* photos here: http://www.gooddayz.nl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2238:gogol-bordellos-zigeunerpunk-in-de-melkwegfotos&catid=79:concert-reports&Itemid=249

Yes, I was! Stripey t-shirt, glasses, pigtails, on the right side balcony, that's me.

And those pictures are gorgeous indeed!

Random thing that I remembered today - at some point Tommy chucked a full water bottle into the crowd... and hit a girl RIGHT IN THE FACE. Oops? Dear Tommy - if you throw water bottles... make sure they're empty first, okay Wink

Aha! Then my memory is better than I thought it was. Hi, retrospectively! We were down the front, right on the left corner of stage on the other side of the room to you. We were next to a guy who REFUSED TO MOVE A MUSCLE THE WHOLE TIME but did jab you with his elbows if you danced anywhere near him, the BASTARD. Not that he annoyed me. *shakes fist*

Anna (mod Anna) accidentally got a full bottle of water in the face from Yuri once. He threw it because I almost got knocked out by a crowd surfer and saw Anna was having to hold me up. Then we had to hold each other up. Wink

Bottles of water are so helpful during gigs, as long as they're not flying at your fizzog.

This was the best gig I've ever seen them play, and I've seen them play quite a lot of times! It was absolutely magical. I needed about two hours to regain my ability to speak because my jaw was firmly attached to the floor. I just wandered around staring into space being almost unresponsive Shocked until it turned into this: Mr. Green - it's still in place!

I remember looking up to see what the crowd in the balcony was like at one point and I saw you! Having the best time by the looks of things Very Happy

A bar around the corner from the venue hung this sign out when they opened for the evening shift. Mr. Green

And a retrospective hi back! I think I saw that dude - big middle aged feller with gray hair and a blue shirt? I've never seen anyone that close to the stage stand that still. Like a concrete pillar!

So have I got this right - GB played a festival in the US on Saturday afternoon, Womad in the UK on Sunday night and then the best gig anyone has ever seen in Amsterdam on Monday night? Don't they get jet lag? They seem to have superhuman amounts of energy. Shocked

When you put it like that, you add a significant amount of fucking hell to the already substantial bloody nora.

Well… this was the second time I saw them play. Remember posting here a little over a year ago after the Paradiso gig Smile This time I managed to convince my girlfriend to come with me and against all my (and her own) expectations she loved it Very Happy

I remember that guy! I was probably standing a few meters behind you Smile Were you by any chance one of the girls who went backstage afterwards?

There was that middle-aged guy in a red shirt as well, who pushed around the monitors before GB came on stage. I was kinda surprised he made it through the rest of the gig without being thrown out by security Smile

I remember another, younger, guy with a blue t-shirt and his girlfriend. His hands were glued to her breasts the entire evening. Just holding them like he was holding her hand. Didn't see them kiss or hug even once. For some reason it looked very strange.

Why do I write all this nonsense and nothing about the gig itself? I just do not know what to say yet. It was amazing. Still totally speechless. Really enjoyed Grupo Fantasma as well.

Yeah. We were stood right next to the stairs up to the balcony.

Oh god, he got such a death-stare from one of the crew. So funny! Was he the guy who tried to climb up on stage to dive but got apprehended by the four security guards? It was hilarious to watch him try to square up to them while keeping a couple of people in front in case they actually decided to throw him out. What a twat!

Yeah, they were cool!

I do agree: best gig I saw from them up till now. Tasted the wine he was drinking during the gig, I'm pretty sure it was bought in the supermarket in Amsterdam since i recognized the bottle immediately: german white wine called "Riesling". If I remember well, the last song they played was Sacred Darling in a mixture of introducing all the band members: "Sergey, professor of Russian Rock and Roll music Suka Bled".
On the other side, the next tuesday was brutal,getting back to the regular life. Mr. Green

Hi Alison

Thanks for the playlist but you missed Alcohol, and that football (soccer song). Not sure if Last One goes the hope was played as well (could have been the gig before this one). And weren't there more encore songs?
