Hi - does anyone know the lyrics for Mishto Please? - I'm particularly interested in the meaning of "Mishto" itself as it could refer to various things.

How did you get your knowledge of Romani?

I've only come across the word in "Mishto-avilian tú" (meaning welcome?) & in "Djelem, djelem".

You wouldn't happen to know any of the lyrics to the song would you? (please?)

p.s. Mishto is also the name of a contemporary female photographer from Thailand

I´m not sure if "mišto - aviljan tu" is used for greetings - if it´s written like that, rather it means good, you were come or maybe you were come/arrived well... in Romani there are not single lexemes to say hello, welcome, good day or if there exists such words, than people don´t use it (as far as I know)...in fact, commonly used are fixed expressions like:

- t´aves sasto taj baxtalo (to a man)/sasti taj baxtali (addresses a woman) and t´aven saste taj baxtale (to more than one person) is very frequently used and let´s say the "most traditional" and means you should be healthy and lucky/I wish you to be healthy and lucky

- Maj mištořo literally: better is analogue to our Guten Tag/Good day and means You should feel still better; I wish you all the best; es soll dir noch besser gehen (I wrote it in German because I´m not so competent in English to express the modus of the phrase exactly)

- Del tusa/tumenca means God with you (sg./pl.)
...and so on

I would be very interested in translating the lyrics of Mišto! - the problem is, I just got a strange phonetic written version from the Internet (maybe I didn´t look carefully), with many mistakes, also the segmentation of the lexemes/morphemes is mostly wrong...sometimes I´m able to reconstruct the underlying word but I don´t have the song on CD, so I can´t be sure if I am right...much better would be a well recored audio-file (wav.) to transcribe it by myself - it´s more reliable, than the Internet-version - and than it´s not so difficult (hopefully) to translate the song word-by-word...after that, the really hard job starts: to get the meaning of the song...so, let us begin!!! it would be helpful if anyone can give me an advice if there exists a reliable transcription of the song, or a good audio-file....

thanx a lot for the link! ...you are right, the rhythm of the song is great but the lyrics - phuuu - really difficult to understand...anyway, I wanna try to get it because I love doing such things. furthermore, I wanna get a clearer idea of GB and what they stand for...certainly, GB is much more than lyrics (sorry for my english - I can´t express my thoughts properly...I hope, it´s not completely incomprehensible) - the emotions which are rising in me when listening to them, their attitude to life, infective passion and so on are not just encoded in their lyrics - you have to feel it or not (and you have to see them live!!! - afterwards you are infected and there is no way out)

you're making perfect sense Dili...that's exactly what we've been saying in other threads, Gogol Bordello has this effect on people and you don't just listen to the lyrics and analyse them and sing along to the words on the CD cover...you feel something when you listen to them and it either moves you or it doesn't.

the first lines, I think, are:

"sha bu'et kruto blya! sha bu'et kruto!"

translates, roughly (and not at all literally), as:

"This is gonna kick ass, goddamn! It's gonna kick ass!"
